Purdue vs West Virginia Preview

The Boilermaker faithful have had Jan 1, 2010 circled on their calendars for quite some time now.  Both Purdue and West Virginia were ranked in the top ten by many preseason polls, with this game being regarded as one of the better non-conference matchups of the 2009-2010 regular season.  Well folks, both teams have lived up to the preseason hype and are undefeated and still ranked in the top ten.  Purdue(12-0) comes into this game being ranked fourth in both the AP and Coaches poll while West Virginia(11-0) is ranked sixth in the polls.

It has been a little bit over a year now since Purdue has had a non-conference top ten opponent come into Mackey Arena.  That opponent was Duke, who came to Mackey and reminded Purdue that they were still just a good team who want not ready to take the step into that elite class.  I was at the Duke game and the stadium was packed before warmups and the feeling inside the stadium was electric until Duke came out to an early lead and never looked back.  With many students gone on Christmas break, the Paint Crew will not be in full force as usual.  This shouldn’t be that big of an issue because the game is sold out and I can’t see many West Virginia fans traveling to West Lafayette for News Years Day.

In my opinion, getting a win tomorrow afternoon will go a long way this season and following years for Matt Painter’s program.  While we are ranked fourth in both polls, most college basketball fans just see Purdue as a team who got lucky with a good recruiting class (Hummel, Johnson, and Moore) and eventually will return back to a perennial above average Big Ten basketball program when they are all gone.  During the Gene Keady years, Purdue was a very good basketball program without any hardware.  Keady never took them to a Final Four in his 25 years, which even includes the two years he had with Glenn Robinson.  Over the last 5 years the college basketball scene has been dominated by the Big East and ACC.  Many view the Big Ten as a boring basketball conference with no exciting players.  Well for the most part this is completely true.  However, these boring teams can play and can win.  Purdue is not only representing themselves but they are also representing the entire conference in a nationally televised game where many people will be at home getting ready for the Rose Bowl to kick off two hours after the Boilers tip-off.

One of the biggest concerns people have with the Boilermakers is the lack of size on the roster and how they match up against bigger teams.  If we take a look at the projected starters you will notice that West Virginia’s lineup is full of guys between 6′7 and 6′9.

Purdue’s Expected Starters:
* G/F: 4 Robbie Hummel- 6-8, 208, Jr., 14.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.8 apg
* F: 25 JaJuan Johnson – 6-10, 215, Jr., 13.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 0.6 apg
* G: 5 Keaton Grant – 6-4, 201, Sr., 6.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.1 apg
* G: 3 Chris Kramer- 6-3, 214, Sr., 6.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.3 apg
* G: 33 E’Twaun Moore – 6-4, 184, Jr., 16.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.5 apg

West Virginia’s Expected Starters:
* F: 5 Kevin Jones – 6-8, 250,So., 15.7 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.8 apg
* F: 41 John Flowers- 6-7, 215, So., 4.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.4 apg
* F: 35 Wellington Smith – 6-7, 245, Sr., 5.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.4 apg
* G: 1 Da’Sean Butler – 6-7, 230, Sr., 16.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.8 apg
* G: 3 Devin Ebanks – 6-9, 215, So., 14.0 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 3.0 apg

Da’Sean Butler who is arguably one of the best players in the entire country will most likely be shadowed by one of the best perimeter defenders in then country in Chris Kramer.  Even though Kramer is giving up 4 inches to Butler along with 15 pounds, I really don’t think he will have a problem guarding him.  Kramer did an excellent job on Stephen Curry last year when the Boilermakers destroyed Davidson at Conseco Fieldhouse in the Wooden Tradition.  He did another great job this year when he was the primary defender against Wake Forest’s Al-Farouq Aminu who is an NBA prospect and and is listed at 6 foot 9 inches.  Aminu went 3-11 from the field with 12 points and 6 turnovers, Kramer had 4 steals that game and played excellent defense.  I’m not trying to fool anyone here, Butler will get his points because he is the focal point in the Mountaineer offense, but I promise you it will be the hardest points he will earn this year and the most inefficient.  What’s so great about this matchup is that even if Kramer gets beat, the Purdue team defensive rotations are almost textbook like.  Painter has drilled his team so well that it’s an anamoly when you see the Purdue defense show a mental breakdown.

The rest of the of the Mountaineer satarters are very good players and can all score from the perimeter.  Devin Ebanks is probably their most highly noted NBA prospect who is projected to be a lottery pick next year.  He can score in a variety of ways and is also going to be a tough matchup.  Look for either Hummel or Johnson to matchup with him on defense.  I’m thinking that Johnson will draw Ebanks because of his length and make it difficult for him to get good looks.  I can then see Hummel picking up Kevin Jones who might be their best offensive post player.  The two remaining guys John Flowers and Wellington Smith will be guarded by Moore and Grant.  My guess is that Moore gets put on Flowers who isn’t as bulky Smith so he doesnt’ waste as much energy guarding a 250lb guy and then be expected to put up 20 points on the offensive side of the floor for Purdue.  It is going to be very interesting how Purdue will matchup on defense with the Mountaineers, but with the way they handled Tennessee on a neutral court at the beginning of the season it should not be a major concern.

Who am I really concerned about?  That’s easy.  What is West Virginia going to do to on defense?   We cause much more matchup problems for them because we are a little quicker than they are on the perimeter.  Bobby Huggins biggest decision will be who he puts on Moore which will then cause a domino effect for the rest of the matchups on the offensive end for the Boilers.  If Huggins decides to go with Ebanks or Butler on Moore you leave only one of those guys to guard Johnson and Hummel.  No disrespect to the West Virginia team, but if Johnson is not being guarded by Ebanks then the Mountaineers are in trouble.  If they do put Ebanks on Johnson and have Butler on Moore, well that leaves Huggins with two 250 lb guys and John Flowers to guard Kramer,Grant, and Hummel.  Hummel is going to have a field day against all three of those guys and depending on who matches up with him, Grant and Kramer will be guarded against guys who will be a step slower than them.  This is where Huggins will have to rely on his team’s help defense which is not as good as advertised after watching Jeremy Hazell from Seton Hall exploit their holes in their help defense.

I might be a little bit of a homer in my prediction but I think Purdue should win this game and will win this game.  Ladies and ladies “friends”,  welcome to the beginning of something great.  Purdue is about to take their first step into becoming an elite college basketball program and what a better day to do it than New Years Day!  As a side note, I hope the Big Ten sweeps their bowl games that day too.

Wishing all of you a Happy New Year in 2010.

BTFU!

A great holiday gift, Join JPC

The holiday season is here and people are in a giving mood right now despite the economy.  Do you really need to buy that extra McChicken sandwich when you already had a double quarter pounder meal with cheese? How about that extra round of lemon drops at the bar right before last call?  Is that really necessary?  No, unless you are douchebag and love lemon drops or you are totally oblivious to the flab that is hanging over your belt.

My recommendation to all you Boilermaker fans is to take that extra money and become a member to the John Purdue Club(JPC) or at least make someone else a member during the holidays.  Right now you must be thinking if I work for Morgan Burke?  I wish!  I’m actually stuck in between MSOE and Marquette grads at work who know nothing about sports and one of them has some pretty bad B.O.

This year I made it my mission to get get people to join the JPC.  I went as far as making some ridiculous Purdue football wagers to get someone to join the JPC.  I actually bet that Purdue would make a bowl game this year.  Loser has to pay the other person’s JPC membership for a year.  Well we all know what happened there.  Even if I would have won, I was going to use the money to buy my friend a JPC membership.  My buddy EA and I have been in peoples ears all year long about the importance of the JPC.  Some of our friends have become members this year because they have asked for it as a birthday or Christmas presents.  Some just did because they saw the value!
Donating to the JPC is all about the big picture in college athletics.  Athletic programs can’t function with out alumni donation.  You could probably field a team, but it really wouldn’t be very good.  Lets face it, in order to win big, the cash needs to be there.  I’m not talking about giving money to college players.  That’s something that SEC schools and USC like to do in their spare time.

Let me ask you this. Who pays Matt Painter’s salary?  The JPC does.
What is going to happen when another school comes knocking on his door with a briefcase full of money?  I know this is his dream job but every man has his price and it is up to all of the Boilermaker faithful that we never get into that situation.  This goes the same for Danny Hope and what he has done in the last year to give promise to the Purdue football program.

It’s a simple domino effect.  Top flight coaches win games and also draw big time recruits.  In order to become an elite basketball or football team you need to win games.  You can’t win these games without the best players or coaches.  Sure you will run into your occasional overachiever, but do you really want Purdue to return to mediocrity after 5 years.  Players and coaches come to programs that are committed to winning.  These days its very difficult to win without greenbacks.  Take a look at all of the top flight programs in basketball or football, they all have huge athletic budgets for facilities and coaching salaries.

Unfortunately we don’t have our own Phil Knight or T. Boone Pickens that is willing to throw ridiculous amounts of cash into the athletic programs. So we have to figure it out a different way.  My proposition to you is to stop eating McChicken sandwiches and give some money back to Purdue.
Together we can kick the crap out of mediocrity!

Enjoy the holidays!

SIU – Edwardsville Cougars @ Purdue Boilermakers (Purdue -39; Total 136)

I am never a fan when a top tier school takes on the dregs of college basketball but I think this game could be a small key to our success in the Big Ten.  The Big Ten is a physical conference and every year Purdue ends up losing a couple starters to injury during the 18 games of conference play.  This grueling schedule of physical basketball stretches out a team’s bench and forces coaches to play younger and more inexperienced players.

Coaches are allowed to be more liberal with their bench because a conference loss does not end the season and it builds depth if a couple stars get in foul trouble in the Big Dance.  This game does absolutely nothing for us in determining seeding in March or strengthening our resume but what I like about this contest is that it should look similar to the Buffalo game earlier this year.  Our starters will play about 20 minutes and be up around 25-30 points at halftime and then the bench will take the rest of this game over.

That sounds like a disadvantage however this is the last cakewalk game we have and Painter will fire up the bench players by using this as motivation and also using the possibility of high-energy defensive and offensive efficiency and production as tickets to playing time down the road.  The Boilermaker bench will look to impress offensively as they did against Buffalo and will be fired up defensively not to allow 39 second half points.

Purdue’s Bench accounted for 43 points against the Bulls

Purdue will flirt with the century mark in this game and I think they will surpass it en route to a 103-55 win.

The Wrestling Report

With the Midlands looming the Purdue wrestling team looks to fight its way into the top 25.  Led by the 7th ranked 174 pounder Luke Manuel the Boilers expect to make a strong showing at the Midlands. The Midlands is a two day tournament at Northwestern University, the results of the Midlands normally mirror the national standings at the end of the year. Purdue has had a huge win against 17th ranked Missouri( ranked in the top ten at the time)  but a slip up against Stanford is keeping them out of the top 25. The Boilers have been performing well in tournaments racking up the 26 highest point totals in the country, they look to continue this elite performance at the Midlands.

Purdue is currently 7 and 1 in dual meets with six more tune ups before the always difficult Big Ten schedule. There are currently six ranked teams in the Big Ten, lets hope that the boilers can crack the top 5 in this always difficult conference.

I.C.B.I.T (Indiana College Basketball Invitational Tournament)

Did you know that the state of Indiana has ten Division I basketball programs coming from six different conferences?  This year those ten teams will have played in a total of nine non conference matchups when the regular season is finished.  Many fans and critics have always pondered the question every year of Who is the best team in the state?  In many years people have just pointed at the series between Indiana vs Purdue, and in the past few years people have hinted as Butler or Notre Dame as candidates for the discussion.  But why should we continue to speculate each year, leave that to college football and the BCS.

My idea is very simple.  Play a tournament in late December every year to set things straight. Only good things can come out of a college basketball tournament designed for the state of Indiana.  The tournament can be played in Indianaplis at Conseco Fieldhouse or Lucas Oil Stadium.  The great thing about Indianapolis is that all of the universities are within 3 hours of the city.

When I took a look at all of the rosters, I noticed that 75 out of the 149 players are originally from Indiana.  With 50% of the players hailing from the state, trying to find fans shouldn’t be a problem.  If the tournament is held around late December near the holidays when most people take vacation to spend time with their families, you will find a lot of people in the state looking for something to do.  What does Indiana like to do the most?  Watch basketball!

What would the logistics of the tournament look like?  I would assume their would be two play in games to create an 8 team bracket.  Their also could be rules that forces teams in the same conference being unable to meet until the championship game or consolation game if there was one.  The great thing about this tournament unlike the other non conference tournaments is that the teams always remain constant and rivalries have the ability to be born.  This eliminates any excuses for teams like Notre Dame avoiding to schedule games against Purdue in basketball.  Good things Digger Phelps isn’t coaching anymore or else I would not even bother writing a piece about this fictional tournament.  There is a good chance that former high school teammates will play against each other year in and year out.  Along with other story lines that Indiana basketball junkies love.

Here is a simple breakdown of the teams that would be involved:

Ball State: 9 Indiana players/ 15 total players, 11.9 miles from Conseco Fieldhouse
Indiana State: 5/15, 77.54 miles
Evansville: 6/14, 181.29 miles
Notre Dame: 2/14, 139.89
Purdue: 14/16, 65.81 miles
Indiana: 7/16, 50.61 miles
IUPUI: 11/15, 1.42 miles( The Jaguars will probably walk to this tournament)
IPFW: 7/15, 120.81 miles
Butler: 10/15, 6.23 miles
Valparaiso: 4/14, 150.97 miles

This could be a hot ticket to buy if the right people managed to put this tournament together.

You are welcome for my creative ideas.

Happy Holidays

Notre Dame to Big 10? Just say NO

notre_Dame_sucksSo, the Big 10 is expanding. Well, hopefully. At least they are looking at the possibility of expansion in the next 12 to 18 months, whatever that means. For argument’s sake, let’s just say they are going to expand. I can’t think of a better thing for the conference right now. The Big 10 is a staple of collegiate sporting and academics and the next team to join should feel privileged and honored to join such an outstanding tradition. Keep that in mind all you out there who think Notre Dame is a logical and correct choice for expansion.

Espn.com today had an article on this very subject in which they interviewed Jack Swarbrick, the athletic director of Notre Dame. When asked if they would like to join the Big 10 Swarbrick said, “Our strong preference is to remain the way we are.” “Independence is a big part of the tradition of the program and our identity. We’d sure like to try to maintain it.”

I’m all for tradition. It’s the one thing that really separates one school from another one. But come on, Jack. That is just dumb. From a monetary perspective it makes absolutely no sense. Notre Dame is paid roughly $9 million per season from the television contract they have with NBC, but Big 10 teams receive an average of $20 million per season from radio and TV fees.

Swarbrick goes on to talk about how business issues aren’t the only thing they look at in this situation. Well sure it isn’t, Jack. You like being able to play all the service academies every year so you can pad your record. Although, that hasn’t worked well lately so I guess you can call them your rival. The reality is the Irish enjoy seeing their name at the top of the IA Independent Standings every year. Well congrats, Irish fans, you were 6-6 which puts you in second place behind your fierce rival, the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy.

Notre Dame played three Big 10 schools this year, including Purdue. After losing to Michigan, they barely squeaked by with victories against the Spartans and the Boilermakers by a total of 6 points. They ended the season with 4 straight losses causing their former savior Charlie Weiss to be let go. So they change coaches, keep the same mediocre to soft schedule and expect to be put in the top tier of programs again.

I couldn’t be happier that the Big 10 is looking to expand. If I had 5 minutes with Jim Delaney I would say this, “Don’t even think about Notre Dame.” They obviously don’t want to disturb their precious recruiting tool of always being on national TV (although these days it’s hard to find a school that doesn’t have televised games), and they wouldn’t dare mess up their rivalry games with USC and Navy. In fact, they could still keep USC, Navy and Boston College on the schedule and have a full slate of Big 10 games. From an academic standpoint, Notre Dame doesn’t measure up with the Big 10 because they do not participate in any research programs. This is all not to mention that the school decided not to participate in a bowl game after the players had voted to accept an invitation. Complete arrogance from the program.

Notre Dame will always be Notre Dame, no matter what conference they are in. Lou Holtz will continue to have them as his preseason favorite to win the national title, and yet still seem to have a job next season after the Irish tank and lose their December bowl game. People across the country will still worship the school whether they went there or not for some reason unbeknownst to me, and the coaching situation will continue to plague the sports world forever. Should the Big 10 expand? Absolutely. Should an invitation be extended to Notre Dame? Why waste time with that? There are plenty of schools out there who would welcome the chance to be a part of Big 10 tradition in every sense of the word. Notre Dame is not one of them.

#5 Purdue 73 – Alabama 65

Purdue vs Bama Highlights

Robbie Hummel vs AlabamaWhat a big win for the Boilermakers tonight in Tuscaloosa. After being outplayed and losing JaJuan Johnson for much of the game due to foul trouble, the fifth-seeded Boilers walked away with a huge non-conference road win.

Here’s a quick rundown of the major plays and players in tonight’s game:

This game more than any other showed how much this Purdue team misses Lewis Jackson. The absence of a true point guard couldn’t have been more obvious to a team that committed 17 turnovers, many of which were unforced. Purdue continued to rush their offense, take quick shots and were not very sound with the orange. This handicap was most noticeable with Johnson out of the game. The bench of Purdue is very, very young. So when first team all Big Ten Johnson has to sit, the Boilers all of a sudden are missing a starting point guard and center from the lineup. This marks the second game in which Johnson has gotten into early foul trouble against a very good SEC team. As a Boilermakers fan, you have to hope the foul trouble issue with Johnson doesn’t become a consistent problem throughout the season.

Game MVP – Robbie Hummel – 23 points, 9 rebounds, 39 minutes

With Johnson only playing 15 minutes, Hummel was called upon to pick up the inside scoring and rebounding. Robbie responded with a game-high 23 points and nine boards. Hummel was the standout player on both ends of the floor. The motion offense ran through Hummel, especially through the high post against the attacking zone the Tide was throwing at the Boilers. On the defensive end, Hummel was called upon to play the five spot most of the night and was the old gold and black’s main man on the glass with Johnson on the bench.

Prime Time Player – Chris Kramer – 14 points, 3 steals

Down the stretch, Kramer made play after play on the defensive end – converting steals to buckets for Purdue. Kramer continues to prove that he is the best defender in the conference and possibly the entire nation once again. Also lost within the game but just as important – Kramer went 8-for-8 from the line in a hostile environment.

Unsung Hero – D.J. Byrd – 9 points, 16 minutes

With the foul trouble of Johnson and the ineffectiveness of freshman Patrick Bade, Byrd was forced to play a lot of minutes throughout the game. His ability to play solid defense at the four spot proved pivotal for a team desperately trying to stay in a game that seemed to be a play or two from slipping away. In addition, Byrd knocked down two big treys in the first half on his way to eight points in the first stanza to keep Purdue within striking distance going into the break. Aside from his first two missed free throws in which he was obviously rushing, it’s hard to find many faults in Byrd’s game tonight.

The One Man Press

Kramer scoring off a steal
1. Chuck Norris
2. MacGyver
3. Chris Kramer

That is now my short list of people I need to call if I need to resolve an issue quick. I was sitting at the Clybar (Purdue’s official bar in Chicago) watching the game in silence until Chris Kramer decided to shutdown the Alabama offense by himself. What I witnessed the last 5 minutes of this ball game was a complete summary of why Chris Kramer value can not be measured in the box score.

Kramer finished with 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 8-8 from the FT line. What the box score doesn’t tell you is that he recorded his 3 steals in the last 5 minutes of the game. The first two steals led to fast break points and got everyone at the bar in a frenzy.

At one point during the closing minutes of the game one of the JV ESPN announcers said the following about Kramer; “I am quicker then you, I am bigger then you, I’m stronger than you, I am better then you, and I want it more then you.” Kramer proved him right on his last steal when he basically suffocated Anthony Brock in the corner and came up with the ball. Someone should check Brock’s white shorts, because I think they changed colors after that play.

Kramer has been on the Big Ten’s All-Defensive Team since his freshman year and won Big Ten defensive player of the year his sophomore year. He is the favorite to win the award this year again. So to all the voters of the NABC Defensive Player of the Year, please watch a replay of the Alabama-Purdue game!!!!

If you don’t I’m going to send 8 x 10 photos of Chris Kramer to all of your children for Halloween next year.

Purdue @ Alabama – Line – Bama +4.5 and total is 135

I am at a bar in NY and I apologize in advance for grammar issues but its raining locks today and I am here to help you out.  I’m going to keep it short and sweet – two factors will control this game the crowd and Robbie Hummel…let me explain.  In Bama’s two loses this year they have been killed by bigs shooting 3’s; FSU’s Chris Singleton was 3 for 3 from boom goes the dynamite range and Ryan Wittman from the big red of Cornell was 5 for 8 en route to 23 points…both of these joes are forwards and over 6′7″…drum roll please for Robbie Hummel…he’s is coming off a good shooting night and bama’s defense is inept at guarding bigs on the arc.

The other key to this game is bama is done with school for the winter…commencement is the 15th and last year vs a 6-1 texas a+m team there were 9,000 fans…they usually have 11 – 13km

Also mark’s madness (similar to the paint crew) has been declining in members….in 2007 they had 1000 members…2008 down to 650…and 2009 down to 450 members…this is due to mark graduating….but without these cameron crazy poser, Purdue locks it up tonight.

Purdue – 4.5
Under 135

Record 0-0-2

Valparaiso @ Purdue (Line: -24, Total: 148)

Valparaiso Crusaders (3-5 SU; 3-3 ATS) out of the Horizon take on the Purdue Boilermakers (7-0 SU; 4-2-1 ATS) out of the Big Ten tonight at Mackey Arena.

The Betting Line for this game is Purdue (-24) and the Over/Under is set at 148.

These teams played last year when Purdue won 59-45 but Purdue did not cover the 25 point spread and the game went under the total of 128 points. Valparaiso has many different faces but still maintains a similar team as last years version and will look to play a stable of 6’1” – 6-6” guards around their 6’-7” forward Cory Johnson. Valparaiso’s leading scorer, Brandon Wood, is coming off his worst game of the year in which he struggled against Butler going 2/6 from the field and only 7 points.

Purdue also has a similar team as last years game but will lose a little offensive production as the rarely used Bobby “Buckets” Riddell (3/4 on three-pointers against Valpo last year) has moved on. Chris Kramer was out for the 2008 matchup with a sprained foot and getting Kramer back for this game will be key in trying to slow down Brandon Wood and force the Crusaders to chuck up three balls. Also note that Robbie Hummel was 4/14 from the field and 1/7 from the arc last year therefore if his shooting slump continues Purdue will still be able to attack with other options.

This Valparaiso team is very similar to the Central Michigan team Purdue beat 64-38 on November 28th except they are worse defensively. Look for the Boilermakers to not think ahead to the Alabama game and clamp down defensively on the smaller Crusaders. Purdue has a huge rebounds differential/game advantage (12.8/game) over the Crusaders and should out rebound them by 15-20 boards. Even though Kramer will be on Brandon Wood; look for him to get into double digits and sink a couple from downtown. Also expect Valpo to shoot a little better then CMU, however, JaJuan Johnson will still control the paint area. I like Purdue to win 83 – 55 for the cover and the under.

Take Purdue – 24
Take Under 148
