It has been a little bit over a year now since Purdue has had a non-conference top ten opponent come into Mackey Arena. That opponent was Duke, who came to Mackey and reminded Purdue that they were still just a good team who want not ready to take the step into that elite class. I was at the Duke game and the stadium was packed before warmups and the feeling inside the stadium was electric until Duke came out to an early lead and never looked back. With many students gone on Christmas break, the Paint Crew will not be in full force as usual. This shouldn’t be that big of an issue because the game is sold out and I can’t see many West Virginia fans traveling to West Lafayette for News Years Day.
In my opinion, getting a win tomorrow afternoon will go a long way this season and following years for Matt Painter’s program. While we are ranked fourth in both polls, most college basketball fans just see Purdue as a team who got lucky with a good recruiting class (Hummel, Johnson, and Moore) and eventually will return back to a perennial above average Big Ten basketball program when they are all gone. During the Gene Keady years, Purdue was a very good basketball program without any hardware. Keady never took them to a Final Four in his 25 years, which even includes the two years he had with Glenn Robinson. Over the last 5 years the college basketball scene has been dominated by the Big East and ACC. Many view the Big Ten as a boring basketball conference with no exciting players. Well for the most part this is completely true. However, these boring teams can play and can win. Purdue is not only representing themselves but they are also representing the entire conference in a nationally televised game where many people will be at home getting ready for the Rose Bowl to kick off two hours after the Boilers tip-off.

Da’Sean Butler who is arguably one of the best players in the entire country will most likely be shadowed by one of the best perimeter defenders in then country in Chris Kramer. Even though Kramer is giving up 4 inches to Butler along with 15 pounds, I really don’t think he will have a problem guarding him. Kramer did an excellent job on Stephen Curry last year when the Boilermakers destroyed Davidson at Conseco Fieldhouse in the Wooden Tradition. He did another great job this year when he was the primary defender against Wake Forest’s Al-Farouq Aminu who is an NBA prospect and and is listed at 6 foot 9 inches. Aminu went 3-11 from the field with 12 points and 6 turnovers, Kramer had 4 steals that game and played excellent defense. I’m not trying to fool anyone here, Butler will get his points because he is the focal point in the Mountaineer offense, but I promise you it will be the hardest points he will earn this year and the most inefficient. What’s so great about this matchup is that even if Kramer gets beat, the Purdue team defensive rotations are almost textbook like. Painter has drilled his team so well that it’s an anamoly when you see the Purdue defense show a mental breakdown.
BTFU!

So, the Big 10 is expanding. Well, hopefully. At least they are looking at the possibility of expansion in the next 12 to 18 months, whatever that means. For argument’s sake, let’s just say they are going to expand. I can’t think of a better thing for the conference right now. The Big 10 is a staple of collegiate sporting and academics and the next team to join should feel privileged and honored to join such an outstanding tradition. Keep that in mind all you out there who think Notre Dame is a logical and correct choice for expansion.
What a big win for the Boilermakers tonight in Tuscaloosa. After being outplayed and losing JaJuan Johnson for much of the game due to foul trouble, the fifth-seeded Boilers walked away with a huge non-conference road win.
